Sophomore outside hitter Aline Pereira and freshman setter Jesica Umansky were named to the 2001 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division I All-Region East Team. The only two players not hailing from an Atlantic Coast Conference school, Pereira and Umansky helped the Patriots to a first place regular season finish in the Colonial Athletic Association.
Pereira appears for the second time in two years on this prestigious team, named to last year’s team as a freshman. Averaging 5.2 kills per game she ranked eighth nationally in the kills per game category. Pereira was also named the 2000 and 2001 Virginia Sports Information Directors’ Player of the Year, an All-Virginia first team selection for two consecutive years, and the 2001 CAA Player of the Year.
As one of four freshman to be named to an AVCA All-Region Team this season, Umansky made an immediate impact for the Patriots this year. Named 2001 CAA Rookie of the Year, the fourth consecutive year George Mason has won this award, Umansky was also named All-CAA second team, and an All-Virginia second team selection. Ranking nationally at 17th for assists per game with 13.09, Umansky was named the East Region Freshman of the Year.
