Patricia Carcamo, Office of Sponsored Programs, has been selected as the December Employee of the Month. Originally from Honduras, Carcamo moved to Northern Virginia 17 years ago. She began working at George Mason 12 years ago as a wage employee in the Bachelor of Individualized Studies Office. After two years, she was hired as a full-time classified employee in the Graduate School of Education (GSE) and the Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies Program. Carcamo currently works as proposal administrator for GSE, the School of Law, and the School of Public Policy.
“I enjoy very much working with different professors and helping them get their grants out,” she says. Carcamo may meet with three to four professors on one project, providing assistance and guidance for completing grant proposals. She handles the financial aspects of the proposal and makes sure all requirements are met. Carcamo is constantly under deadline, juggling paperwork and professors. “It’s a very challenging and rewarding job,” she says.
The many letters supporting Carcamo’s nomination praise her energy, humor, and dedication in dealing with tension at grant submission time. “She has always handled the stress of preparing and submitting proposals with a very positive attitude and calm demeanor,” says Margaret Hanson, assistant director for pre-award and development. “She consistently demonstrates thoroughly professional work practices that are a model for the other staff members and that contribute greatly to the effectiveness and efficiency of the office.”
Before moving to Northern Virginia, Carcamo received her bachelor’s degree in psychology in Nicaragua.
