Response, an intellectual and emotional outlet for the artist participants, is an exhibition of student art organized as a collective reaction to the Sept. 11 attacks on New York and Washington. The show includes painting, sculpture, photography, digital arts, printmaking, and mixed media and opens at the Fine Arts Gallery and Johnson Center Gallery today. An opening reception is held Thursday, Nov. 29, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Fine Arts Gallery.
Response is a collaboration with Corcoran College of Art and Design, Virginia Commonwealth University, and the University of Maryland at College Park. The show runs through Dec. 21.
Art and Visual Technology (AVT) faculty Paula Crawford and David Chung, who serve as guest curators, were in the process of preparing for a painting exhibition when the attacks occurred. The exhibition was rethought and reorganized in direct response to a profoundly changed world, as specifically reflected by campus life. AVT professor Tom Ashcraft joined the curatorial team and several other area schools were contacted. The students involved expressed an interest in participating in Response as a way of processing their own feelings about post-Sept. 11 reality.
