The women’s volleyball team will be looking to take a trophy home this weekend when they host the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championships at the John Linn Memorial Gymnasium. The Patriots, the top seed in the tournament for the second straight year, will open play against No. 4 seed Delaware at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, with No. 2 William and Mary meeting third-seeded Hofstra at 7 p.m. in the other semifinal. The championship match is set for 3 p.m. Sunday, with the winner gaining the CAA’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The team brings a 9-match overall win streak and a 10-match streak against CAA opponents into the weekend. George Mason’s previous two meetings with Delaware in the regular season resulted in two wins for the Patriots. At home on Sept. 28, they defeated the Fightin’ Blue Hens in three games, and at Delaware on Oct. 16, they won in four games.
Sophomore outside hitter Aline Pereira leads the Patriots into the tournament. She currently ranks sixth nationally in kills per game average with 5.21. That also ranks first in the conference, second going to teammate senior outside hitter Natalia Torres-Tirado, who averages 3.98 kills per game. Both have won CAA Player of the Week awards this season, with a third one going to senior middle blocker Jill Pearson.
