Hanan Ashrawi, a member of the Palestine Legislative Council (PLC), will speak at George Mason on Wednesday, Nov. 7, about the future of the Israel-Palestine conflict in light of the present violence and political impasse. She will also offer her personal perspective on the current situation of Palestine in the context of recent global events. The event is held in the Johnson Center Cinema at 8 p.m.
In addition to her PLC role, Ashrawi is also the Arab League commissioner for information and policy, and secretary general of MIFTAH–a Palestinian, Jerusalem-based independent institution committed to fostering the principles of democracy and effective dialogue based on the free and candid exchange of information and ideas. She is well known to American and global television audiences for her independent stance on the Palestinian cause.
Ashrawi was the spokesperson for the official Palestinian delegation at the Madrid peace negotiations from 1991 to 1993. In 1994, she founded the Independent Palestinian Citizen’s Rights Commission. Elected in January 1996 as an independent candidate, she is now one of the two Christian members of the Palestine Liberation Organization for Jerusalem, and she had been minister of higher education in President Arafat’s cabinet until her resignation in 1998.
