Kenneth Thompson, English, will discuss strategies for using film as a teaching tool on Wednesday, Oct. 17, at 2 p.m. in the Johnson Center, Assembly Room D. The session is the third in a series of showcases sponsored by the Center for Teaching Excellence and the Instructional Resource Center.
The technical and pedagogical methods Thompson uses can be applied across disciplines, from business to history and geography. In courses he developed, including “Media Censorship and the Emergence of New Technologies,” “Victorian Crime Literature High and Low,” and “Shakespeare and Dickens in Film,” his students learn to analyze and interpret written texts by comparing them to film and other visual media. They also become more reflective about their involvement with visual culture.
The fourth faculty showcase will be held Nov. 6. Margaret Yocom, English, will discuss the innovative approaches she uses to engage students in the classroom.
