As GMU-TV’s video productions continue to improve in quality and reach, so does its electronic presence on the World Wide Web. This month GMU-TV launched its new “Video on Demand” page, featuring downloadable videos and streaming media. At the new page, web surfers can view entire episodes of GMU-TV’s Capital Region Roundtable and Tech Horizons. Popular downloads include GMU-TV’s “Survivor Portfolio Video,” the Gault Award videos, and some of GMU-TV’s Mason Highlights.
“The response was just overwhelming,” says Steve Watson, GMU-TV’s webmaster. The videos for download were in such demand that GMU-TV had to remove some of the download links because users were overloading the web server. GMU-TV and the Division of Instructional and Technology Support Services are working to find a new file server to alleviate the server load. In the meantime, the page’s streaming media continues to inform and entertain because it is hosted by the Research Channel, a national network with which GMU-TV is an affiliate.
GMU-TV hopes to use the Internet to maintain its standing as one of the nations’ top educational television stations and video producers. “A strong web presence is essential for any multimedia producer today,” Watson says.
