The GMU Players, the university’s student theater organization, is adopting a new management style. Starting this year, Clayton Austin, the production manager for the group, will share the reins with a faculty-assigned artistic director. The artistic director position will rotate each season to a different member of the theater department’s faculty.
The reasoning behind this new order is simple: “It provides a combination of continuity (from the production manager) and fresh ideas (from the yearly artistic director),” says Austin. “We are developing a system that promotes a professional model of production while giving faculty and students creative opportunities to work together.”
The GMU Players has been entertaining the Mason community since the early 1990s and welcomes students from all disciplines. The students are responsible for all aspects of the university’s Studio Series, including direction, design elements, and acting. Tickets to these productions are free of charge and available on a first-come, first-served basis.
