Howard Kurtz, teacher of costume design and head of the costume department at George Mason, will serve as artistic director for the GMU Players’ 2001-02 season. Kurtz has designed for numerous shows for both GMU Players and Theater of the First Amendment (TFA). He received the 1995 Helen Hayes award for Outstanding Costume Design for the TFA production Dream of a Common Language.
“In our theater, we attempt to help the audience imagine how it feels to be someone else, to have a brief glimpse as to how and why other human beings behave,” Kurtz said. His vision statement for the upcoming year reads, “Instead of providing two hours of escape from the cruelties and discomforts of the world, we would like to offer possibilities for hope and encouragement for action while returning you to the world with a new point of view, new ideas, and a new incentive.”
