Travis Tyler, a senior exercise science major, represented George Mason in this year’s Wheel of Fortune College Tournament. In response to the show’s request for contestants, Tyler’s mother mailed in a postcard with the pertinent information (without telling Tyler). Tyler admits that after receiving the letter bearing the Wheel of Fortune logo his initial reaction was disbelief. “I tried to think which one of my friends could pull off a joke like this,” he said. It was then that his mother confessed to submitting his name and assured him that the letter was authentic.
After competing his way through the final round of tryouts at the Mayflower Hotel in downtown Washington, D.C., Tyler won a seat beside the wheel. Unfortunately, his opponent from American University won the competition and even set a record for the most money ever won in a single episode. As for Tyler, after setting the show’s new record for the most bankruptcies, he chose the letter “Y” and was able to solve the last puzzle (“Why don’t you sleep on it?”). He walked away with $600 cash. When asked about the experience as a whole, Tyler had only one comment: “I met Vanna White…what more can I say?”
