Marlys Shoup, supervisor of the Learning Resources Office (LRO) in University Computing and Information Systems (UCIS), is the August Employee of the Month. A George Mason employee for 17 years, Shoup has worked as an information technology analyst and in other capacities for UCIS since 1984. She is now responsible for providing training to the university community on Microsoft Office products, e-mail, Windows 98, and other programs.
According to Kathleen Gillette, manager of UCIS Support Services, Shoup has provided excellent training to the university community and positive student evaluations prove it. “Excellent ratings are consistent for the classes she teaches–3.96 out of a possible 4.0 for knowledge of a subject, 3.9 out of a possible 4.0 for would recommend to a colleague. This reflects the high standards Marlys stands for in providing technical training,” says Gillette.
Within the last six months, Shoup has made it a priority and a requirement for all instructors, including herself, to be certified in the areas that they teach. Shoup has also developed for her staff standard operating procedures, which will be available online in the near future. “This will have a significant impact on future employees because the training curve should be reduced by having immediate access to interoffice procedures,” says Gillette.
In her Employee of the Month nominations, Shoup was repeatedly praised by students for her gifted teaching style, providing a comfortable learning environment, and dedication to increasing the skills of her fellow employees.
