Women’s Basketball Team to Open in Preseason WNIT

For the first time in its history, the George Mason women’s basketball team will open their 2001-02 season in the first round of the 2001 Preseason Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). They play at the University of North Carolina on Friday, Nov. 9, in Chapel Hill.
The winner of the game will advance to meet the winner of the Temple-Evansville matchup on Sunday, Nov. 11, at a site to be determined.
The 16-team field also includes two-time NCAA champion Connecticut, 2001 NCAA tournament teams Vanderbilt, Colorado, Fairfield, Stephen F. Austin, and Oral Roberts, as well as 2001 WNIT runner-up New Mexico.
The George Mason women’s basketball team closed the 2000-2001 season with a 21-9 mark, tying the school record for most wins.
