Simms and Phillips Earn CAA Rookie Accolades

George Mason freshmen Allen Simms and LaToya Phillips were named the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Rookie of the Year award winners for men’s and women’s track and field by the league’s head coaches.
Simms led the Patriots to an 11th-place finish at the National Collegiate Athletic Association Indoor Track and Field Championships and a runner-up finish at the Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America Outdoor Championships. He was rated the top collegiate triple and long jumper of 2000 by Track & Field News and set the George Mason indoor triple jump record and earned All-America honors three times.
Phillips led the women’s squad to a runner-up finish at the CAA championships. She won the 100-meter hurdles, placed second in the triple jump, and finished fourth in the long jump. She was also the runner-up in the long jump at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Indoor Championships and won the long jump at the Disney Relays and the triple jump at George Mason’s Spring Invitational.
George Mason has produced 29 CAA Rookie of the Year winners, including seven winners in 2000-01.
