George Mason freshman All-American Allen Simms made history last weekend, winning both the long jump and the triple jump at the USA Track and Field Junior National Championships in Richmond on June 16 and 17.
He is the first athlete to win both the long and triple jumps at the same meet since the inception of the Junior National Championships 29 years ago. Simms posted a mark of 50 feet, 9 1/2 inches to win the triple jump, while leaping 25 feet, 8 inches in the long jump.
Competitors at the Junior Nationals are between ages 14 and 19 and must meet a qualifying standard in their event. The competition served as a selection meet for the Junior Pan American Championships to be held in Santa Fe, Argentina, in October. With his wins, Simms qualified for the Junior National team and will compete internationally in England and Scotland this summer.
