George Mason junior forward Jon Larranaga and his older brother, Jay, are each competing with the Irish National Basketball Team this summer as it attempts to qualify for the 2003 European Championships, which serves as a qualifying tournament for the 2004 Summer Olympics.

Led by former University of Richmond head coach Bill Dooley, Ireland is currently 2-1 in its pool consisting of Switzerland, Finland, and Iceland. The Irish Senior Men’s Team beat Finland, 70-68, on June 6 and defeated Iceland, 70-59, on June 9. Ireland plays its final round of games against Switzerland at home on Aug. 25, at Finland on Aug. 29, and at Iceland on Sept. 1.

“It is very exciting to watch your two sons compete as teammates,” says George Mason men’s basketball coach Jim Larranaga. “It is also satisfying to see them represent the country of Ireland, where many of our ancestors were born and raised.”
