Eight members of the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) are on the Fairfax Campus today to determine whether or not the Washington/Baltimore area has suitable facilities to host the 2012 Summer Olympics. They will visit several campus sites, including the Aquatic and Fitness Center.
If the Washington/Baltimore Regional 2012 Coalition is successful in its bid to host the Olympics, several events could be held at George Mason, including wrestling, swimming, judo, and track and field.
The USOC site evaluation team arrived in Washington on Sunday and toured the area yesterday. Among their stops were the National Mall, RFK Stadium, PSINet Stadium, and the University of Maryland at College Park.
This is the first of eight destinations for the USOC. The other cities in the running to host the 2012 Olympics are Cincinnati, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, and Tampa.
