George Mason sophomore volleyball player Art Kulans has been named to the District III Verizon Academic All-America first-team for the University Division in the men’s spring at-large category.
Kulans helped guide the Patriots to a 20-7 overall record and 12-2 mark at home. Among the many highlights of 2001 include George Mason’s 3-1 defeat of then-No. 12 Penn State in which Kulans had a team-high 12 kills, seven digs, and two blocks. Kulans averaged 1.68 digs, 2.69 kills, and 0.67 blocks per game.
Kulans, a finance major, has the highest grade point average of any sophomore student-athlete at George Mason with a 3.978 GPA. A finalist for the university’s Student-Athlete of the Year Award, Kulans was named to the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association’s All-Academic Team. He is also active on George Mason’s Student-Athlete Advisory Council.
“It’s no surprise that Art is able to excel both in the classroom and on the court,” says head coach Fred Chao. “He manages his time very well and always strives for achievement, while still managing to be the best of team players.”
