The George Mason men’s track and field team will be represented by three athletes in four events at the 2001 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon, from May 30 through June 2.
The Patriots, ranked 17th in the Trackwire 25 poll, will conclude a challenging 2001 outdoor schedule at the NCAA Championships. They come off a runner-up finish less than two weeks ago at the Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America (IC4A) Championships, where they trailed defending-champion Georgetown by just one point.
After a one-year hiatus from competition at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, the Patriots will look to freshman All-American Allen Simms to lead the contingent in Eugene. Simms will compete in both the long jump and triple jump. Senior Kurt Duncan and junior Chris Baker will both make their first trips to an NCAA Championship. Duncan, the Colonial Athletic Association champion and two-time IC4A champion in the 400-meter hurdles, currently ranks eighth in the nation in that event. He will compete in the semifinals today and again on Friday if he advances to the finals. Baker will follow a similar schedule, competing in the 800-meter dash.
