Two new degrees in the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) have been approved by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV). The degrees are a master’s in communication in the Department of Communication, and a bachelor of arts in religious studies in the Philosophy and Religious Studies Department.
According to Cindy Lont, chair of the Communication Department, planning for the new degree began two years ago, when faculty surveyed the local communication community and performed an analysis of university programs in the metropolitan area. The results found a need for a master’s in communication with a focus on public relations and organizational communication.
The religious studies degree is devoted to the understanding and interpretation of religion as a fundamental constituent of human experience. In order to study religion in its full complexity, it makes use of a number of methods that have been developed in different disciplines of the humanities and social sciences. The department offers courses in Eastern and Western religions and Old and New Testament studies.
Both degrees will be available this fall.
