Two Faculty Members Named Fenwick Fellows for 2001-02

Rose Cherubin and Peter Mandaville, both from the College of Arts and Sciences, have been selected as the Fenwick Fellows for the 2001-02 academic year. The Fenwick Fellowship is awarded annually to instructional faculty members for the pursuit of a research project that utilizes the University Libraries’ resources and advances knowledge in the field. The award includes a research office in Fenwick Library and a stipend of $1,500.

Cherubin, assistant professor in the Philosophy and Religious Studies Department, will focus her research on Parmenides, Zeno, and the framework of scientific knowledge. She will investigate and dispute claims that Aristotle, in his Physics, intended to refute or solve the paradoxes of Zeno and the conclusions of Parmenides, and illustrate that Aristotle’s response to these predecessors explored and served as precursors to the notion of “framework assumptions” in modern science. Expected outcomes of her fellowship include publication (journal articles), and the addition to her course web site of her translations of Zeno and of ancient discussions of his paradoxes, and expansion of library holdings.

Mandaville, assistant professor in the Public and International Affairs Department, will use the fellowship for research for a major study of non-Western alternatives to modern political practice, more specifically, the nation-state. He intends to look at the viability of the modern, territorial nation-state, not by focusing on supra-national or regional organizations such as the European Union, but rather to look within the state–particularly post-colonial states in the developing world. Expected outcomes of his fellowship include publication (journal articles and longer term book-manuscripts) and an increase in the University Libraries’ holdings in the area of non-Western political thought.

Cherubin and Mandaville will present their research findings through a public lecture in academic year 2002-03.
