After leading the George Mason men’s volleyball team to a 20-7 overall record and an 11-3 conference mark, third-year head coach Fred Chao was named the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) Coach of the Year in a vote by the conference’s head coaches.
Despite entering the season with just one senior on the team, Chao guided the Patriots to their best record and first winning season since 1995, when they finished 22-9. In a complete turnaround from their 9-16 record and fifth-place conference finish in 2000, Chao led three Patriots to all-conference honors.
This season the Patriots finished third in their conference and advanced to the semifinals of the EIVA Tournament, where they lost, 2-3.
