Senior Andre Melo and junior Chris Barnes of the men’s volleyball team were named to the All-Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) First Team. These were the first all-conference picks from George Mason since four Patriots were selected in 1995, when the team went 22-9 and finished second in the EIVA.
Melo, the team’s only senior, has led the nation in ace average during all 10 weeks of the season, averaging 0.66 aces per game. Melo holds every George Mason record in service aces — career (106), single-season (52), and single-match (8). He has also ranked nationally in kill average and hitting percentage.
Barnes is second in the nation in hitting percentage (.483) and fourth in blocking average (1.62 bpg), and currently has the highest hitting percentage in a season in George Mason history.
Junior setter Jonathan Hanners was an All-EIVA Second Team selection, and sophomore Art Kulans was named to the All-EIVA Academic Team.
