George Mason seniors George Evans and Erik Herring each were selected by the Maryland Mustangs Tuesday in the 16th Annual United States Basketball League (USBL) draft. Evans was the top overall selection in the draft, while Herring was the 47th overall pick in the fifth round.

The USBL, billed as the “League of Opportunity,” has a strong history of graduating players to the NBA. In its 15-year history, 132 players have made the jump from the USBL to NBA rosters, including players such as Muggsy Bogues, Charlie Ward, Chris Childs, and Anthony Mason. Evans and Herring are still eligible to be selected in the National Basketball Association draft in June.

The Maryland Mustangs will begin play in the USBL in 2001. The USBL schedule generally runs from late April through late June. The Mustangs will play at the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, and will be coached by former Boston Celtics star Robert Parrish.
