Dean Miller, fiscal technician senior in the Office of Sponsored Programs, is the April Employee of the Month. Miller’s job is to manage state, federal, and private grants for research. He works on reconciling accounts and budgets, approves expenditures, and follows state, federal, and university expenditure guidelines for hundreds of grants.
“I like the day-to-day analytical work and problem solving,” says Miller. “Some days I’ll spend all day on the phone trying to solve problems. Other days I’ll work on reconciling accounts.”
Miller has been employed at George Mason since 1994, when he joined Admissions as a student worker. He graduated two years later with a degree in communication and stayed on as a classified employee; he moved to the Office of Sponsored Programs in 1999. Miller is working on a graduate degree in education at Mason, and he hopes to become a teacher and eventually a school administrator.
The many letters supporting Miller’s nomination came from all corners of the university and focused on his hard work and cooperative nature. “Despite the many competing demands on his time, Dean always is cheerful, and he maintains his great disposition through the most stressful situations. It is a pleasure to work with him,” says Mary Clark, administrator in the School of Public Policy at the Arlington Campus.
