The 11th Annual Women’s Leadership Conference for College and University Students explores Women in the Media on Saturday, March 31, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Johnson Center. It highlights the essential contributions of women as producers of mass media. The conference provides a forum for discussion of issues concerning the development, enhancement, and effectiveness of women’s leadership.
The featured keynote speaker, Marcia Ann Gillespie, has served as Ms. magazine’s editor in chief since 1993. As editor in chief of Essence magazine from 1971 to 1980, she is credited with transforming the publication into one of the fastest growing women’s magazines in the United States.
Conference topics include “The Choices Women Make: Achieving A Work/Balance,” “Delivering the New Message (Using Multimedia),” “Shattering Images: Women Dismissing, Creating, and Reclaiming Media,” “Playing Herself: Gender and Sexuality” as performed by hip hop’s Lil Kim, and “Out of the Box and onto the Adventure: Women, Leadership, and the Outdoors.” An optional Team Development Course at Hemlock Overlook takes place that evening and Sunday morning, April 1.
