In a further explanation of Gov. Jim Gilmore’s recent announcement that Virginia’s colleges and universities will not experience any reductions in their state general operating budgets, secretary of education Wil Bryant informed college officials on Friday that “it will not be necessary (for them) to seek exceptions to the temporary hiring freeze to fill vacancies.”
“The temporary freeze on discretionary spending has been lifted as well for higher education institutions,” says Bryant.
Bryant also urged college and university officials to operate within the constraints of their current state general fund operation budgets. However, he did reiterate that the current moratorium on capital projects funded with general funds in the 2000 Appropriations Act remains in effect.
