Gov. Jim Gilmore announced yesterday that operating budgets at Virginia’s universities will not be cut, and there will be no layoff of employees. However, the hiring and spending freeze that is currently in place will be continued for now, according to the governor’s office.
“This situation regarding the freeze is still unclear,” says Maurice Scherrens, senior vice president. “We have been told we will get more information on Monday. In the meantime, all offices should continue to follow the spending guidelines we’ve already established. As soon as we hear more, we will inform the campus community.”
The governor’s freeze on all college and university planned capital spending remains in place. This will affect building plans at all three campuses.
