George Mason hosts a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) basketball championships selection show reception for the men’s and women’s teams on Sunday, beginning at 4:30 p.m. in the Johnson Center Atrium. The brackets for all 65 teams in the tournament will be revealed, and the Patriots will learn who, when, and where they will play in the first round.
The men’s selection show will be broadcast live on CBS at 6:30 p.m., while the women’s selection show is at 5 p.m. broadcast on ESPN on a wide screen television.
George Mason’s men’s and women’s basketball teams are having their best combined record in the 43-year history of the university. Behind head coach Jim Larranaga and All-America candidate George Evans, the men’s basketball team (18-11) captured their second Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) championship and NCAA tournament trip in the past three years after defeating the University of North Carolina-Wilmington Monday night on ESPN2.
The women’s team is in the midst of an outstanding season (20-7) with one of the nation’s top turn-arounds going from 10-19 last year to 20 wins this season under head coach Debbie Taneyhill. As the third seed for this weekend’s CAA tournament, George Mason defeated fourth seed UNC Wilmington in Norfolk last night, 58-47. They play second seed James Madison University today at 5 p.m. Two other NCAA-bound Patriot teams will be recognized as the wrestling team will send a record seven wrestlers to the championships in Iowa on March 14, while the indoor track and field team has two All-America candidates competing at the NCAA tournament in Arkansas this weekend.
