Two instructors from the English Language Institute (ELI) are participating in a teacher exchange with Brazil as part of the Fulbright Scholar Program, an exchange program that sends scholars and professionals overseas where they lecture and conduct research in academic and professional fields. Steven Copley, core instructor and special projects coordinator, and instructor Carole Esser are both traveling to Brazil on March 17.
As part of the exchange, Mason hosted two visiting Fulbright Scholars from Brazil this semester: Araken Barbosa from the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, and Simone Reis from the Universidade Estadual de Londrina. The scholars, who arrived on Jan. 13 and returned to Brazil on Feb. 24, spent their time observing ELI and teacher education classes; meeting with ELI, education, and linguistics faculty members; team-teaching several classes at ELI; and conducting research.
The purpose of the exchange is to allow instructors from Brazil and the U.S. to engage in a variety of educational activities for a six-week period of time in the exchange countries. Instructors observe and teach classes, discuss methodology and pedagogy, do research, and develop curriculum and learning materials. For more information, visit the Fulbright Scholar Program web site.
