CAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Starts This Weekend

The George Mason men’s basketball team will be looking for its second Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) championship crown and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Tournament bid when it travels to the Richmond Coliseum for the 2001 Ukrops/ First Market Bank CAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, March 3-5. The Patriots clinched a bye in the first round and will play their first game on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
For the 12th consecutive year, the Richmond Coliseum will host the CAA Championships for the three-day event. ESPN2 will carry the championship game on Monday for the fourth consecutive season. The 2001 champion will receive an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. The Patriots won the regular season title the past two seasons (1999 and 2000) and captured the tournament title and NCAA bid in 1999.
George Mason, 11-5 in the CAA, will enter the tournament as the second seed behind the University of North Carolina-Wilmington. Both teams have first-round byes and will not play on Saturday. The Patriots will play the winner of Saturday’s Virginia Commonwealth University/James Madison University game.
