The George Mason wrestling team clinched their 16th consecutive winning season by prevailing in two of three matches last Saturday in a quad meet at Franklin and Marshall College. The Patriots defeated Howard University, 36-15, before dropping a 43-3 decision to Rutgers University, but the team came back to defeat the host Diplomats, 33-15, to cap a successful day. The Patriots now have an 8-1 overall record.
Freshman Tony Howard had a successful day as he won each of his matches at 165 pounds. Howard pinned his first two opponents, and he scored a decision in his third match to improve to 18-3 this season.
Senior Sean Shea and sophomores Matt Hunckler, Chip Campbell, and Clay Frook each won two matches. Shea improved to 22-7 at 125 pounds, Hunckler raised his record to 14-8 at 133 pounds, Campbell moved to 8-14 at 184 pounds, and Frook improved to 11-6 at 197 pounds.
Sophomore Donnie DeFilippis, who boasts a 23-3 overall record and is currently ranked fifth in the nation by both Amateur Wrestling News and InterMat at 141 pounds, had the flu last week and did not compete. Junior heavyweight Brent Lancaster, 16-4 this season, also sat out the weekend with a swollen left knee.
George Mason returns to Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) competition Tuesday as they visit James Madison University at 7 p.m. The Patriots take a 42-6 all-time record in CAA dual meets into the meet at Godwin Hall.
