When George Mason expressed an interest in creating its own youth club swim team, the university didn’t have to look any further than the Aquatic and Fitness Center to find another interested party. Already using the facility were the Makos, a USA swim team founded by Heather and Niels Moore. So last semester, the university and the Makos formed a partnership, making the Makos the official team of George Mason.
The partnership gives the Makos increased access to the Aquatic and Fitness Center and an expanded relationship with George Mason’s collegiate team. The teams not only share facilities and equipment but also work together to share ideas on how to improve the youth team, according to Niels.
The Moores began the Makos six years ago as a developmental program with only a handful of swimmers. The program now has 450 developmental and competitive swimmers, and its growth can be attributed to the Moores’ winning coaching style, love for the sport, and evident enjoyment in what they do.
