A block party, basketball game, and fireworks highlight “Mason Mardi Gras,” George Mason University’s Homecoming 2001 theme, today through Saturday, Feb. 17.
The pre-game block party begins at 1:30 p.m. in Parking Lot L on Saturday. Festivities include music, face painting, a make your own Mardi Gras mask craft corner, and food to purchase. At 4 p.m., the men’s basketball team plays rival James Madison University at the Patriot Center in a rematch of last year’s homecoming game, which the Patriots won 76-64 in front of a record-breaking crowd. Fireworks at the Mason Pond follow the game.
Homecoming week is filled with a variety of activities. Say What? Karaoke, George Mason’s version of the hit MTV show, is held today from noon to 2:30 p.m. in the Johnson Center Atrium. Tomorrow is Spirit Day, with a parade beginning at noon. Thursday features Star Search, a talent competition for students, from 7-9 p.m. in the Bistro. Friday is highlighted by a bonfire from 6-9 p.m. in Parking Lot F. Capping off Homecoming 2001, the Mason Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball follows the afternoon activities Saturday, Feb. 17, from 8 p.m. to midnight. Students wear Mardi Gras masks and beads, and the king and queen will be crowned.
