Mason Track and Field Teams Successful at Patriot Games

George Mason’s men’s and women’s track and field teams claimed nine individual titles and two relay titles at their annual Patriot Games in the Recreation Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon.

The men’s team was led by senior Chris Stokes, who provisionally qualified for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships with a 7.89-second win in the 60-meter hurdles. Top finishes were also posted by sophomore Serge Bengono, a two-time Olympian for Cameroon, in the 60-meter dash (6.89); senior Marlon Stewart in the 400 meters (50.35); freshman Ben Sommers in the one-mile run (4:23.67); and freshman Wayne Wright in the high jump (6 feet, 4 inches).

The men’s 4×400-meter relay team won in a time of 3:18.48, and the women’s 4×800-meter relay team took the top honors, finishing in 9:26.12. Sophomore Michelle DiPenti earned an individual honor, winning the 800-meter race in 2:20.64. Freshman LaToya Phillips was also an individual champion in the 60-meter hurdles (8.77) and the triple jump (38 feet, 93/4 inches).
