In just his second collegiate meet, George Mason freshman jumper Allen Simms automatically qualified in a second event for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, with a school record-setting leap of 55 feet, 1½ inches in the triple jump at Virginia Tech’s Kroger Invitational.
Simms is 2-for-2 this season in posting NCAA automatically qualifying marks. On Jan. 6 at George Mason’s season-opening Father Diamond Invitational — his first collegiate meet — he automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships in the long jump with a personal-best jump of 26 feet, 2¼ inches. As of Jan. 18, that performance still ranked as the best collegiate long jump this season.
With his recent mark in the triple jump, Simms may enter the NCAA rankings on top in this event as well. He out-jumped the NCAA automatic qualifying standard by almost two feet, setting George Mason and facility records along the way.
