The George Mason Homecoming Committee is hosting a spirit competition for all university departments, offices, schools, and colleges during the weeks preceding Homecoming 2001, Feb. 12-17. Prizes include a plaque, an office pizza party, and a candy-filled goodie bag. The deadline to register for the competition is Monday, Jan. 29.
The spirit competition begins with the office decorating event, in which points will be awarded based on creativity, artistic design, incorporation of the Mardi Gras theme, and overall display of school spirit. The deadline to have office spaces decorated is Jan. 31. The next two events are the “Purge the Purple Clothing Drive” and “Caught with Mason Spirit,” both beginning on Feb. 1 and ending at noon on Feb. 16. Points will be awarded for the clothing drive for the number of articles of clothing received with purple as the predominate color.
“Caught with Mason Spirit” will bring a taste of Mardi Gras to the university as Homecoming Committee members and select students award faculty and staff who have exhibited Mason Spirit. Mason Spirit ranges from wearing Mason paraphernalia to showing pride and enthusiasm when they speak of the university.
For the third event in the spirit competition, faculty and staff are challenged to come up with an original spirit song, chant, cheer, or poem that includes their office name, George Mason University, and homecoming. The contest takes place on Feb. 12 from noon to 2:30 p.m. in the Johnson Center. The spirit competition comes to a close on Feb. 13 with the banner contest, in which the banners are constructed on a flat twin sheet that includes the office name and the homecoming theme.
