Two nationally ranked wrestlers highlight the field for the Virginia Intercollegiate Wrestling Championships this weekend on the George Mason Fairfax Campus.
Competition begins at 9 a.m. tomorrow at the John Linn Memorial Gymnasium with the first-round, quarterfinal and consolation first-round matches being contested. Wrestling continues at 2:30 p.m. with the semifinals, consolation quarterfinals, and consolation semifinals. The consolation finals and championship finals will take place simultaneously on two mats beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Mason joins James Madison University, Old Dominion University, the University of Virginia, Virginia Military Institute, Longwood College, and the Newport News Apprentice School in challenging for the top honor in Virginia wrestling. Nationally ranked wrestlers sophomore Donnie DeFilippis of Mason and junior Jeff Rusak of Old Dominion highlight the field of competitors, which can include two wrestlers from each school in each of the 10 weight classes. The highest-scoring competitor in each weight class scores points for his team.
The event is being held for the 32nd year and returns to Fairfax for the first time since 1984. Since team scores were added in 1980 to determine a team champion, Virginia has won seven of the 21 championships, while George Mason and Old Dominion have claimed five each.
Admission is $5 per session (the arena will be cleared before the consolation and championship finals) or $8 for the full day.
