Nancy White, Information Technology, a George Mason employee for 14 years, has been named January’s Employee of the Month. White spent most of her career at Mason in the College of Arts and Sciences’ Student Academic Affairs office. For the past two years she has worked as an administrative assistant for Joy Hughes, vice president for information technology.
White is responsible for Hughes’ schedule, travel arrangements, and other office duties.
“I am a detail person-that’s what I do best,” White says. “I love to make the travel arrangements-I try to take care of even the smallest details like where she is to park, so that she can just focus on her job once she gets there,” she says.
White, who now lives in Burke, lived in Brazil and Peru for two years each. “I learned Spanish and Portuguese when I was there and I have such a love for the South American culture,” she says. “I try to speak Spanish with many of the employees on campus.”
In her nomination, Hughes said White has a depth of cultural understanding and a flexibility that together make possible many enriching opportunities for the IT unit. “For example, she was able with two hours notice to accommodate a visitor from Japan who learned about George Mason at the last minute and wanted to visit the university before he returned to Japan.” White quickly made arrangements for him to come and meet with technology staff and visit our technology facilities.
The Information Technology unit encompasses many functions and is spread out over many locations on all three campuses. “Nancy White has been invaluable in helping to create a sense of unity and community among these diverse units,” says Anne Agee, executive director of the Division of Instructional Improvement and Instructional Technologies.
