The new assistant athletic director for public relations at George Mason comes with a wealth of sports communication experience. Matt Winkler spent the past seven years at American University and was recently named the assistant athletic director of communications there after serving in the athletic department for six years as the director of communications and sports information. Winkler will officially begin his duties at George Mason on Jan. 3, 2001.

“We are excited to have someone with Matt’s expertise join our family at George Mason,” says Tom O’Connor, director of athletics. “His experience with working with the media in the Washington area and throughout the region should prove extremely valuable.”

Winkler also has been a member of the faculty in American’s School of Communication, where he taught the 500-level curriculum course “Sports Communication,” which analyzes how sports is communicated through the media, and features special guest speakers from the industry. In addition, Winkler is a member of the Public Relations Society of America.

He also worked as an assistant in the Sports Information office at Lehigh University from 1991-93 prior to returning to his hometown of Bethesda, MD, to work at American.
