George Mason freshman volleyball player Aline Pereira has been named the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) Co-Player of the Year. Senior Deanna Zwarich of the University of Virginia shares the honor with Pereira.
Pereira started every match for George Mason, leading the top-seeded Patriots to the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) tournament finals. The 2000 CAA Rookie of the Year and a first-team All-CAA and all-tournament selection, Pereira led the league in kill average (5.45 kpg) for all 10 weeks of the regular season and was nationally ranked in kill average for six weeks. Pereira recorded double-figure kills in the last 26 consecutive matches, including two 30-plus performances. Her 37 kills versus James Madison University are the second-most by a Patriot in school history. Additionally she recorded 13 double-doubles (kills-digs) this season.
Also on the all-state first team are Patriots Natalia Torres-Tirado and Daniela Pastore. Torres-Tirado, a junior, earned all-state first-team, All-CAA first-team and CAA all-tournament team honors for the second straight year. Pastore, a senior, makes her first appearance on an all-state team. She was a second-team All-CAA selection after leading the conference in assists average for six weeks this season. She finished her career second in George Mason history with 3,381 career assists, and continues to hold the Patriot record for single-match assists, having made 87 assists in a match against San Diego State University in 1998.
