Before he retires on Jan. 24, 2012, Gilberto Guerrero will be able to add one more award to his already-large collection: Employee of the Month for January 2012.
Guerrero, building supervisor for the Johnson Center, was previously named Employee of the Month in April 1991. He also received the university’s Exceptional Support Award in 2004. And if he had an award from every person who had ever sung his praises, he’d need to have a room the size of Dewberry Hall to hold them all.
He was first hired as a housekeeper for Student Union Building I in 1978. Thirty-two years later, Guerrero gets much of the credit for keeping the Johnson Center operating smoothly.
“Even with all the changes and growth throughout Mason’s history, Gilberto’s dedication, loyalty and love of Mason and the community never changed,” wrote Sisc S. Johnson, business manager for Student Centers, in her letter nominating Guerrero for Employee of the Month.
“Gilberto has always managed and trained his staff to provide only the most exceptional service, so there is little doubt that the operations crew of the Johnson Center will remain providing the highest in customer care and satisfaction, but I believe Mason is losing an icon; a true Patriot,” Johnson added.
Following are some other comments about Guerrero:
“Life as I know it will cease when Gilberto retires from Mason. He is ready and willing to help at anything he can. He often anticipates what I need for an event.” – Beth Grohnke, conference manager, Events Management
“He consistently provides excellent customer service and is there when we need him, whether we prepared him in advance or if it is a last-minute change. His work and service continue to be exceptional, and he always does everything with a smile on his face.” – Bridget Peabody, training assistant, Learning and Professional Development, Human Resources and Payroll
“Gilberto is the person I have known the longest at Mason and has been an example to pattern after. He has taught me a lot both in my career and personally. He has instilled how every event deserves the same level of care no matter if it is nationally televised or a new student organization’s first event. In all the years I have known him, I have never seen him lose his temper.” – Keith B. Ellis, associate director, Student Centers
“I worked with Gilberto in one capacity or another for 20 years. He was the hardest working person I ever had the pleasure of knowing. When Gilberto finally retires, I think you’d better plan to replace him with two people — or maybe three.” – Sally Bonham Mohle, former business manager for the Johnson Center and Student Union Operations
Although it’s not likely Guerrero will be forgotten after he retires, his name will live on in Student Centers through the award named after him: The Gilberto Guerrero Customer Services Award.
President Alan Merten will present Guerrero with the Employee of the Month award at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2012. Guerrero’s family, co-workers and friends are all encouraged to attend the ceremony, which will be held in Merten’s office in Mason Hall, Room 103.
