The George Mason men’s basketball team was selected to finish second and the women’s team was picked to tie for fifth in the 2000 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Basketball Media Day Polls conducted Wednesday. Coaches and media and sports information personnel participated in the polls.
The Patriot men, 19-11 last season and coming off back-to-back CAA regular season championships, received 5 first-place votes to 11 for Richmond University, which was selected to win the CAA title. The Spiders received 142 total points while the Patriots received 135.
On the women’s side, George Mason, 10-19 last season, received 114 points as did Richmond, leaving the two schools tied for fifth place. Old Dominion University received all 23 first-place votes and 207 points as the runaway choice for CAA champion. If the poll is correct, this will be Old Dominion’s 10th straight season to be CAA champion.
Patriot senior George Evans, who was selected as the CAA Player of the Year for the past two seasons, is favored to win the honor once again. He received 12 first-place votes and 76 points to outdistance University of North Carolina-Wilmington sophomore Brett Blizzard.
George Mason senior Jen Surlas, a first-team All-CAA pick last season, received the second-most points on the women’s side with 73, trailing Old Dominion senior Lucienne Berethieu, the two-time CAA Player of the Year, who received 22 first-place votes and 114 points.
