Two demonstrations are expected to be at George Mason’s Fairfax campus on Wednesday, Nov. 9. The groups are the Virginia Citizens Defense League (VCDL) and the GMU General Assembly, not Occupy George Mason as was initially reported.
The protest by VCDL is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Quad area between Student Union Building I and Fenwick Library. This group is protesting the university’s weapons policy, which prevents persons from bringing weapons into any campus building or to any university and campus events. University Police anticipate some of the VCDL protesters may display weapons. Police will be monitoring the protesters’ behavior closely to ensure this demonstration is peaceful and not disruptive or threatening to any members of the university community.
The protest by the GMU General Assembly is scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m. in the North Plaza near the clock. This event is designed to be a public forum giving all members of the Mason community an opportunity to discuss issues of mutual concern and, according to the organizers, address “injustices here at Mason and come to solutions that work for us all.”
According to University Police, the two demonstrations are unrelated.
