The Campus Planning Office invites all members of the Mason community to take part in a town hall meeting regarding the West Campus Connector Project on Tuesday, Nov. 1, at 10:30 a.m. in the Johnson Center Cinema.

The university is executing the design and construction of a roadway connecting the east and west sides of the Fairfax Campus across Route 123/Ox Road and continuing to Braddock Road at a location at or near Prestwick Drive.

Construction is anticipated to start by late fall 2012 and conclude no later than fall 2013.

The planned road is a single lane in each direction, with bike lanes and sidewalks on both sides, ultimately allowing for expansion along Rapidan River Road to two lanes in each direction.

Project goals are to

  • enable safe traverse for pedestrians, bicyclists and vehicles to and from the east and west sides of the campus without an at-grade crossing of Ox Road
  • enable the off-loading of campus traffic west of the Route 123/Ox Road and Braddock Road intersection in order to ease congestion at that intersection
  • provide and enhance circulation between the two portions of the Fairfax Campus without precluding future development of the west side of campus
  • minimize the environmental, community and other impacts in the project’s execution
