The first lecture of the African American Faculty Lecture Series is given today by Michelle Smith-Bermiss, English and African American Studies (AFAM). The speech, titled “Playing Herself: Gender and Sexuality as Performed by Hip Hop’s Lil Kim,” takes place
in the Johnson Center, Paul Robeson Room 240A, from 1:30 to 3 p.m.
“This talk is an attempt at a reading that, in explaining her appeal to hip hop fans–as well as the haute monde of fashion–locates the hip hop phenomemon Lil Kim at the intersection of two ostensibly dissimilar performative signifying practices: hip hop and drag,” says Smith-Bermiss.
