George Mason’s brass quintet performs today at the groundbreaking ceremony for the George Mason Memorial Gardens beginning at 2 p.m. President Alan Merten is the guest speaker for the event, which is expected to draw more than 200 guests. The memorial will reside downtown on the National Mall.
The memorial is a project of Liberty 2000, a campaign directed by the Board of Regents of Gunston Hall, and will sit across from the future site of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial. The central element of the garden memorial will be a statue of Mason. It will be the first monument to reside on the National Mall that is dedicated to an individual who did not serve as president of the United States.
George Mason’s brass quintet is composed of Drew Ross, trumpet; Mark Metrinko, trumpet; Josh Sprague, horn; Greg Freeman, trombone; and John Rosa, tuba.
