When the clock strikes midnight tonight, it will mean one thing for colleges and universities across the country: basketball season is now underway. According to NCAA rules, the earliest time basketball practice can start is 12 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 13, and that is when the George Mason men’s and women’s basketball teams will put their talents on display at Mason Midnight Madness. The event, which is free and open to the public, begins at 10:45 p.m. tonight.

United Parcel Service is the title sponsor of the event, and more than 2,000 fans are expected to attend the festivities, which feature pre-practice games for fans, events and interactive competitions. The nationally-recognized George Mason cheerleaders and Masonettes Dance Team will perform dance routines, and the basketball teams will be introduced. The evening promises to be full of boisterous family fun.

The Patriot men are the two-time defending regular season Colonial Athletic Association champions while the women’s team is expected to challenge for a first-place finish in the division this year.
