In Memoriam: Stephen J. Brown, Professor Emeritus

Stephen J. Brown, Professor Emeritus of English, died on July 26 of unknown causes, according to an obituary in the Washington Post. He was 82.

Brown received a bachelor’s degree and a PhD in English from Yale College, and he had a fellowship at Clare College in Cambridge, England.

He taught at Swarthmore College and George Washington University before joining Mason when it was still George Mason College. He retired from Mason in 1994.

Brown is survived by a sister, Mrs. James Crawford of Essex Fells, N.J.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 24, at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church, 4700 Whitehaven Parkway, NW, Washington, D.C.
