Recently, the Science and Tech buildings on the Fairfax Campus were given new identities, and Housing VIIIA now has names for its buildings.

Science and Tech I and II

As progress continues on the addition and renovations to Science and Tech II, the University Naming Committee, a group of university administrators from diverse departments, decided it was time to give the Science and Tech buildings more illustrative names.

The Naming Committee submitted its suggestions to Mason’s Executive Council, which recently approved the following names:

  • “Planetary Hall” for Science and Tech I
  • “Exploratory Hall” for Science and Tech II
  • “Laboratory Annex to Exploratory Hall” for the addition to Science and Tech II

The new names will officially take effect July 1, 2012, though the addition will not be completed until October 2012 and renovations will continue until the summer of 2013.

The Executive Council also approved the names “Rogers” and “Whitetop” for the two residence halls that are part of the housing project at the corner of University Drive and Route 123.

The names were selected as a reference to the two highest mountain peaks in Virginia, given that the location of the housing project is the highest point on the Fairfax Campus.

Rogers and Whitetop will add 600 beds to campus, bringing the overall on-campus resident population to approximately 6,000. Both buildings are well ahead of schedule and are expected to be completed by January 2012.
