For the 20th consecutive year, the George Mason men’s soccer team will host an annual tournament, and the 2000 George Mason/Kappa Soccer Classic set for this weekend promises to be one of the best in the history of the event.
The tournament features James Madison University (2-0), the University of Rhode Island (2-0), Hofstra University (0-1), and George Mason (2-0). In first-round action today, James Madison meets Hofstra at 2 p.m. and George Mason takes on Rhode Island (ranked 11th in the nation by Soccer America) at 4:30 p.m. The Dukes and Patriots trade opponents Sunday, with James Madison facing Rhode Island at 1 p.m. and George Mason meeting Hofstra at 3:30 p.m.
James Madison won twice in its tournament last weekend, defeating Iona 7 to 0 and beating Appalachian State 3 to 2. Rhode Island, which won the Atlantic 10 Conference championship and finished 17-4-1 in 1999, opened its season last weekend with victories over Siena and Providence. Hofstra lost a 2 to 0 decision at Fairfield Sunday to open its season.
